An ad eundem degree is a courtesy degree awarded by one University to an alumnus of another. Back in the days, when a graduate from a given University moved to teach or work into another University, it was usual for his new University to admit him as a courtesy "to the same degree" (in Latin: ad eundem gradum). Thus his new University spared him of a lot of forms and procedures, simplifying the recognition of his degree. Although this practice has almost fallen out of usage now, still some Universities will grant this kind of degree.
